Swarovski Flatback 2078 Rhinestones: flat-base sparkle
Within our Swarovski crystals section, the 2078 flatback rhinestones are the perfect choice when you need sparkle with a secure fixing. Their flat base and precise cut make them easy to glue or set onto all kinds of surfaces, bringing elegance and lasting brilliance to any creation. Since 1980 we’ve helped artisans and designers add that touch of light that makes the difference.
What are flatback rhinestones?
Flatbacks are crystals with a flat back, designed to be applied onto a surface rather than strung. They reflect light through their faceted top while the flat base ensures a firm hold. They’re ideal for jewelry, headpieces, flamenco accessories, footwear, garments and decoration. You’ll find them in four sizes so you can pick the one that best suits your project.
Available Swarovski rhinestone sizes
Rhinestone size is measured in “ss” (stone size). The higher the number, the larger the diameter. These are our four sizes:
ss12 rhinestone
The smallest in the range (approx. 3 mm). Perfect for fine details, fill-in work and delicate designs. View ss12 rhinestones.
ss16 rhinestone
A small-to-medium size (approx. 4 mm), very versatile and one of the most used for jewelry and accessories. View ss16 rhinestones.
ss20 rhinestone
A medium size (approx. 5 mm) that stands out without being excessive, ideal as a centrepiece in many designs. View ss20 rhinestones.
ss34 rhinestone

Frequently asked questions about Swarovski rhinestones
What do ss12, ss16, ss20 and ss34 mean?
“ss” stands for “stone size” and measures the crystal’s diameter: the higher the number, the larger the size. Approximately, ss12 equals 3 mm, ss16 4 mm, ss20 5 mm and ss34 7 mm. It’s best to confirm the exact measurement on each product page.
How do you apply flatback rhinestones?
As they have a flat base, they’re applied onto the surface with crystal-specific glue or by setting. Some models also come in a hotfix (heat-adhesive) version, fixed with heat. Check the product page to see which type each one is.
Which rhinestone size should I choose?
It depends on the effect: smaller sizes (ss12, ss16) are ideal for details and fill-in work; medium and large (ss20, ss34) work as a centrepiece. Combining several sizes usually gives the most eye-catching results.
Which projects are they for?
For jewelry, headpieces, hair combs, flamenco accessories, footwear, garments and decoration. Any surface where you want to add fixed sparkle is a good candidate.
